Why isn't my plumbing business showing on Google?
Why your plumbing business isn’t showing on Google, and how to fix it.

The two-minute check
- Open Google Maps in a private browser window and search your exact business name. Do you appear?
- Search “plumber in [your town]” and “[your service] in [your town].” Where do you land?
- Open your Google Business Profile dashboard. Any warning, suspension notice or “unverified” label?
1. You're searching from the wrong place
Google ranks local results partly by distance from the searcher. If you search “plumber” from your shop, you see a different map than a customer across town. Check from the neighborhoods you want work in, or search “plumber in [town]” from a private browser window.
2. Your profile isn't verified (or doesn't exist)
An unverified Google Business Profile won’t show on Maps. Search your business name on Google Maps; if you can’t find it or it says “Claim this business,” claim and verify it at business.google.com.
3. Your profile is suspended
Common triggers for plumbers:
- Extra words in the business name, like “24/7 Emergency Plumber.” Google says unnecessary information in the name could result in suspension (source: support.google.com).
- A virtual office, coworking desk or P.O. box used as the address.
- Showing a home address customers don’t visit, instead of setting up as a service-area business.
Fix the cause first, then request reinstatement through Google Business Profile Help. Don’t create a new profile: duplicates make it worse.
4. The wrong primary category
Your primary category is the strongest relevance signal you control. If it’s “Contractor” or “Water heater installation service” when most of your work is general plumbing, set it to “Plumber” and add the others as secondary categories.
5. Your service area is set wrong
Google allows up to 20 service areas (source: support.google.com)and says the overall area shouldn’t be more than about two hours’ drive from where you’re based (source: support.google.com). Listing a whole state doesn’t make you show up everywhere; it can make you look less relevant everywhere. List the towns you really serve.
6. You're closed when they search
For urgent searches, being open matters. If your profile shows you closed at 9 p.m., you’re less likely to show for a 9 p.m. “plumber near me.” Don’t fake 24/7 to fix it; set hours you’ll actually answer, and add an after-hours line if you have one.
7. Competitors have more (and newer) reviews
Reviews are part of prominence. You don’t need thousands, but you do need a steady stream. Text a review link to every customer after every job, for nothing in return; bought or filtered reviews break both Google’s rules and the FTC’s (source: ftc.gov).
8. Your website doesn't back up the profile
If your site has no page for the job someone searched, a different phone number than your profile, or is blocked from search engines (it happens after redesigns), Google has less reason to show you. Check that each service has a page, and that your name, number and towns match exactly.
9. Duplicate or inconsistent listings
Two Google profiles for the same shop, or an old address and phone number still live on Yelp, Facebook and directories, split your signals. Remove duplicates through Google support, and update every listing to the same details.
After you fix it
Google rechecks profiles and pages regularly, so profile fixes often show within days to weeks. Reinstatement after a suspension can take longer. If you’d rather not do this yourself, keeping your profile and website in step is part of every PlumberEngine plan. How the map pack picks.
