Local SEO for plumbers
Local SEO for plumbers: what moves the map pack, and what doesn’t.

Why the map pack is most of local SEO for plumbers
On local searches, Google’s map pack sits above the regular results. Whitespark’s study of local searches across six industries, plumbers included, found a local pack on 93% of local-intent queries (source: whitespark.ca). In our own October 2026 check of “plumber” searches in five metros, the pack topped all ten results pages we pulled. Ranking in it is mostly about your Google Business Profile, with your website supporting it.
How Google picks the plumbers in the map pack
Google says local results are based mainly on three things: relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help). For a plumber, that means:
- Relevance: does your profile match the search? Your primary category (Plumber), your listed services, and the pages on your website that describe each job.
- Distance: how close you are to the person searching, or the location in their search. You can’t change where customers are, which is why you rank better near your shop than across town.
- Prominence: how well known you are: reviews (how many, how recent, how good), links and mentions around the web, and your overall presence in search.
Distance is why reviews alone don’t decide it. In our Austin sample, the plumber at #2 had 189 reviews and sat above a shop with 17,975 at #5; in Boise, the #3 shop had 37.
What actually moves the map pack for plumbers
- The right primary category. “Plumber” for most shops, with secondary categories only for work you really do.
- Every service listed on the profile, and a matching page on your website for each.
- Accurate service areas. Google allows up to 20 (source: support.google.com), and says your overall area shouldn’t be more than about two hours’ drive from your base (source: support.google.com).
- True hours. If you say 24 hours, answer 24 hours. Being open when someone searches matters for urgent searches.
- Steady reviews from every customer, and replies to them.
- Photos of your real trucks, crew and work.
- Consistent listings on Yelp, Bing, Apple, Facebook and the BBB, with the same name, number and area.
What doesn't work, and what gets plumbers suspended
- Keywords in the business name. “Smith Plumbing | 24/7 Emergency Plumber Austin” might rank for a while, but Google’s guidelines say adding unnecessary information to your name can get the profile suspended (source: support.google.com).
- A virtual office or P.O. box as your address. Not allowed (Google’s guidelines). If you work from home and customers don’t visit, set up as a service-area business and hide the address.
- A page for every city. Thin pages that swap one town name for another are what Google’s spam policy calls doorway abuse (Google spam policies). One service-area page, plus a page per real office, is the safe pattern.
- Bought or filtered reviews. Against Google’s rules and the FTC’s, with penalties of up to $53,088 per violation (source: ftc.gov).
Where your website fits in local SEO
Your website supports the profile (Google reads it to understand what you do) and wins the searches the pack doesn’t: specific jobs like “sewer line replacement in [town],” where a dedicated service page from a local firm is usually the result that wins below the pack. It needs your name, number and service area to match the profile exactly, a page per service, and your hours. What a plumbing website needs.
When a spam listing ranks above you
Map spam is real in plumbing. In our Austin sample, the #1 result for “plumber” was an unclaimed listing at a downtown office-tower address with 24-hour hours, linking to a bank’s website: almost certainly spam or a data error. You can report a listing like that with “Suggest an edit” on Google Maps. It’s worth a few minutes when it’s holding a spot you should have.
